Synthetic vs Human Hair Wigs
Cut a strand of hair and burn it with fire. The smell of real human hair and chemical fiber hair after burning is completely different from the state after burning. Real human hair wigs will turn into black balls after burning, and will turn into powder when rubbed lightly with your hands. The smell is a kind of burnt protein. The chemical fiber wig will shrink into a hard lump after burning, smelling of stinky plastic burnt.
Under the light, the reflection of the synthetic wig will be very strong, obviously plastic feeling. However, virgin human wigs look no different from our own hair and also show natural reflections in light.
There is a layer of hairy scales on the surface of human hair, which looks like fish scales when looking under a microscope. It's very smooth when you touch it from the root to the end. But when you touch it backwards, there is a sense of obstruction. But synthetic hair feels the same when touched from any direction.
Human hair wigs offer the most natural look and feel. It can be washed, ironed and dyed many times. Whereas synthetic hair lacks in versatility. Its curl is fixed so it is difficult to change, and it cannot be styled to many different ways like human hair counterparts, even the heat friendly fiber can be difficult to style as synthetic fiber is more resistant to change.
Synthetic hair wig would cost considerably less in comparison to those that are made from human hair. The reason for this is because of the availability of raw material.
In the case of synthetic wigs, the raw materials are relatively abundant, so the price is very cheap. However, when it comes to human hair, this is not the case as the demand for it exceeds the supply. In other words, the scarcity of human hair leads to high costs.
With proper care, Human hair wigs are more durable, it can last between 1 and 3 years. They are remarkably soft with a shine and movement that is not easily duplicated in synthetic hair.
While Synthetic hair wigs are less durable compare to human hair. With proper care you can expect synthetic hair wigs to last about 4-6 months (heat friendly synthetic hair 2- 3 months).
The thing is that Asian or Caucasian straight or lightly wavy virgin hair (on a human, not in a wig) is sometimes as shiny as the picture of synthetic hair in this article, especially if the person doesn’t use heat styling, harmful hair product, or any other harsh practices. And especially especially if they use all-natural herbal dyes or glosses (henna, indigo, cassia, etc.). Those make the hair super-smooth, strong and shiny.
My hair is like that, so the human hair on the right would look a bit too dull on me. I don’t have a ton of hair so I bought a synthetic clip-in weave from China to fill it out, and it matches my hair exactly. Now, a cheaply made Party City-type wig would look plastic.
